These Canadian grime miners finally make the jump from tape to vinyl, tearing down the walls in the process. Definitely pick one up while these are still around.

Holy Cobras – Holy Cobras 7"
Holy Cobras begin the A-side of this corker with head-trip ready blurs of disembodied voices before kicking in the garage stomp with a yelp, instantly dirtying the hell out of this track. They give garage a motorik pulse that seems destined to
snap at any moment and with the aid of some John Dwyer-style howls near the track's peak, it seems that may indeed be the outcome. Instead the track simply sinks back into the melted glass menagerie of voices that began it. On the flip, the band gets even more zoned out with a hypnotic display of repetition. It pulses and an undulates on a bed of fuzz so thick its impossible to discern shapes, let alone instruments. All in all a great entry to wax for this longtime tape fave.

Endless Boogie

Endless Boogie crawl out of the soil once more for a full length that’s greased with the ravenous energy of Beefheart locked into a devastating guitar loop. The band has made their reputation stretching the riff into a monolithic structure and the tower grows ever higher on Full House Head. Punctuated by Top Dollar’s gravely rasp and amiable fretwork; the band crafts albums for anyone who’s ever had a dirty blues heart and a road weary soul. Broiling the ghost of the 70’s boogie band into fighting shape they’ve dragged the past with them into the shell of 2010 but never with wide-eyed winking nostalgia. They roll down the tarmac with a powerful sincerity and an aim to rock the living shit out of you and I’ll be damned if they don’t succeed. Pick up this monster on vinyl, I can’t think of a more perfect pairing of sound and format.

Evan Caminiti

When the respective parts of Barn Owl aren't joined in darkened union they're just as busy on their own. Jon Porras has crept alone under the name Elm and when not ensconced in Higuma, Evan Caminiti goes solo under his given name. Last year's Psychic Mud Shrine put aside any doubts that Caminiti couldn't bring the bucolic darkness of the Owl on his own and in quick succession West Winds erects him as a master of cavernous guitar. More meditative and cloaked in solitude than his previous offering, Caminiti constructs blues as played for scorched soil; evoking the kind of dystopian futures that exist only in the minds of Cormac McCarthy and Marcel Theroux. The label is quick to call out Hex-era Earth and that's an apt comparison, Caminiti inhabits both their Western desolateness and cinematic Morricone soul. But in the end West Winds owes only to its driving hand, with Caminiti divining lonesome drone-blues for a hypnotic dawn that may never come. Certainly if we had anything to say about it this darkness would spread forever.

Gunter Schikert – Samtvogel
If something can be said to fall on the lesser known side of Krautrock (itself not the most overly household friendly entity) I'd say Schikert might qualify. Though he worked with Klaus Schulze, his work is much closer to another of that
genre's lost classics Echo from A.R. and Machines which appeared in these pages not too long ago. Built around dizzying layers of guitar that swirl and zip from right brain to left brain and back again; the album is definitely a long lost classic of headspace inducing psychedelia, but combined with the motorik pulse that made German progressive music so distinctive. The fist track is just a portal to the huge slabs of sound present in "Kriegmaschinen, Fahrt Zur Holle" and the titanic closer "Wald". The three pieces seem fairly intertwined, forming a full on trip that just happens break for a few moments of breath before sliding further into universal consciousness. The truly amazing part of this album's dense end result is how painstakingly Schikert had to work to construct it; utilizing multiple tape recorders and only a two track mixer to craft the final shimmering opus. The album was reissued once before in 1981 and has lain dormant for quite some time but thankfully Wah Wah Records has stepped up to rescue it again, though only in a run of 500 so don't sleep on this already hard to find gem.

Archers By the Sea

As usual Stunned dig up some of the best noises peeking out of subcutaneous tape caves, and since their runs are minuscule of course we’ve come by Archers By the Sea just as the tape dissipates from physical existence. Still, Vincent Caylet is a busy man; recording under the names “V”, The Pistil Cosmos and as a duo in Monks of Balhill, so it seems likely that he’ll pop up again very soon. Sometimes We Should Dance evokes quite a few impulses but most shy away from dancing, instead delving deeper into meditative stews of drone and pulse. The cassette is wrapped in layers of esoteric static that weave through guitar divination and what may very well be synthesizer fallout. Caylet creates throbbing worlds of pulse and flutter that waver like undersea lights, beckoning listeners close in trancelike patterns before absorbing them completely. Its always a good idea to keep your eyes pinned to Stunned’s news feed because they turn up gems like these constantly, but blink and they’re gone.

Our favorite Olympians return with a pair of 7"s that only seem to cement their sterling reputation as faves in the twitchy realms of post-punk skree around here. Super limited so get those grubby paws ready to grab fast!

Christmas – Scenic Beauty 7"
This 7" saw release in late June at CMRTYZ's PSYCHEDELIC SUMMER installation at Rare Gallery and it’s a double shot of Christmas' frantic intensity, all flailing limbs, rubbery bass and sonic slap. The band fits the reigns of Oly pop perfectly,
strapping on the tattered shirtsleeves of DIY and post-punk with a touch of the urgency that's fed out of the maniac boredom of so many of the Northwest's finest. Emily Beanblossom loses cool with the best of them, leaving only the shattered remains of composure on the stage in her wake. The single is closely followed by a sister release that'll see light in August in a similar vein. Both are available at the Bandcamp page below.

MV & EE

MV & EE released this new set of lycergic droplets via Child of Microtones in an extremely limited run of CD's and now it gets the vinyl treatment from Pete Nolan's Arbitrary Signs. Liberty Rose strays from the muscular burnt blues that mark their work with The Golden/Bummer road crew, instead opting for the lonesome psych-folk backwoods of their other limited runs such as In the Pines. Erika and Matt delve into the ghost folk meditations that have made them longtime favorites of RSTB, channeling the soul of the very vacated stretches of desolate woods that the album was written in. On the B-side the band is joined by Doc Dunn who's spent some time contributing to their fuller recordings in the past but this time ads a transient spirit charmers touch to the campfire recordings. The duo has amassed a heap of releases but its always nice to hear them strip things back to their essence, eschewing any need to wrestle with people's expectations of them and instead wrestling with their own foggy demons and pinning them to tape.

International Hello

From the ashes of Monoshock rises International Hello, oddly enough with pretty much the same line up and a not too distant sound that begs the question - "Why the identity crisis?" Still, no matter what they're called, the band picks up the California blown-psych baton, lights it on fire and tosses it to the parched woods just like no time's elapsed. Over the course of four long form tracks the band sift through their Japanese psych inflections, their Krautrock rhythm workouts and their noise floor mop ups; stewing them all into a flayed and frenzied slab of a record that's sure to please Monoshock devotees and newcomers alike. Things take a decidedly spacey turn on the B-side, adding yet another layer of psychic goo to amplifier tortured from the first side. The band forms a six-armed fury that tears itself apart over and over like a human diorama of chaos theory in motion. Each time seems like it has to be the last, as if no more deconstruction can be handled before it all melts to the floor; and yet, each time it begins afresh ready to unhinge again.

Hanoi Janes EP

I think there's very little else that can be asked of Oliver Scharf this year, with an excellent single, album and now a new EP all keeping the needles on turntables everywhere just a little bit happier. Full of the same bouncy pep and shoestring Spector-vision that's made his releases so much fun in the past; Specks Ho! knocks around the room like a 6 year old on a birthday cake sugar high. Still, once the funfetti settles, its clear that Scharf has songwriting skills that stretch far beyond the sparkly bells and elastic strums and each song gets itself ingrained deeper and deeper into your consciousness with additional listens. The EP's out in digital format now but should land as a vinyl EP shortly via the always reliable Captured Tracks.

News

News – Hot Off the Press
The most striking aspect of News' tragically overlooked Hot Off the Press is the band's use of steel guitar as a force of West Coast psych rather than in its usual country connotations. The band wield it to add a woozy touch to
their soulful, strident catalog; and much in the same way that Cold Sun effectively apply the Autoharp to Texas-fried psych, News bring the instrument into its own in the canon of melodic 60's tinged pop. That last fact may have actually sunk the album more than the opening track featuring experiments in radio static, the album submerges itself in the eclectic mix and attitude that fueled the 60's but unfortunately News was treading these waters in 1974. Critical and commercial response aside; this reissue, that boasts two additional tracks, shows off News' honey-tinged harmonies and West Coast easiness, making it one of those great gems that roll out of the seemingly endless vaults.

Apache

Apache come clipped right out of the pages of a vintage issue of Creem from 1978, pure snotty power pop at its most delightful. Often crusted with a crass veneer (it takes a special mentality to write a song called "Finger Banger" and sing it like you mean it) but always shot through with a thick dose of catchy riffs that are as raw as they are reverent to their forefathers. There are moments that might fool the most ardent digger into discovering a long lost power pop gem but definitely a faint whif of metal thrust that saddles Apache's latest up to the leather toughened side of the Hunx and Nobunny crowd. Everything about Radical Sabbatical swaggers to the mic, cock sure and halfway to the afterparty before the set's begun, then it walks away with your date and leaves you gaping. But you can't help but smile because you gotta admit, they did it with style.

Ah HoZac, it seems that everything that comes this way from that venerable institution hits the sweet spot immediately. This new 7" from Fungi Girls is not exception, garage sweetness all over.

Fungi Girls – Turquoise Hotel 7"
For such young kids, the Fungi Girls seem to have their 60's inspired moves rather locked down. From the thick veneer of fuzz to the surf slide that yowls its way out of the title track of this disc, all the moves are in place and sounding pretty good. This
one's a little tougher than the free album that made rounds late last year. A side's all stomp and swagger with that aforementioned surf squeal. The flip gets a bit of jangle and a touch more pop that feels more comfortable on the band, though both sides aren't without their charms. An interesting look into what might be coming up for the band to say the least.

Baths (Royal Baths)

More great treats from out San Francisco way. All the quality jams radiating out of that core center are enough to make a guy think twice about relocating. The Baths, who've recently rechristened themselves Royal Baths to avoid confusion with a group that just beat them to it, have a rather engaging tape out now on WZRD MNTN. Despite sharing touring space with a few of the Bay Area's garage greats, Baths occupy a much darker space than many of their contemporaries. Shades drawn and amplifiers on permanent buzz, they pound through a pins and needles attack on the psych palette that sounds more in tune with the swampy burn of Texas than the sunny shores of California. Though I suppose even temperate climates can't make everyone shine through with positivity and jangle, and in a way it's refreshing to give into the negative pound; the creeping, bloodshot, late night burns that occupy the weedsick mind. Definitely a necessary release to pick up this year if you can get your hands on the cassette version or I guess you'll have to wait for their new Woodsist LP, Litanies, a little later.

Cassis Cornuta

First off, the title of this one translates to "Can I Pee In My Pants Just Once" ...and that may actually be enough background to sum up the record. Begged by Ultra Eczema to release some of his massive archive of recordings, Daniel de Wereldvermaarde Botanicus has finally obliged, rounding up some of his madness onto one LP. Many of these pieces may have appeared previously on his radio show for Radio Centaal in Antwerp, a now 25 year institution. Collector of hats, cacti, found recordings and anything that might make noise, Daniel has beaten the very ideals of noise into a new, mangled shape. 808's crumble beneath field recordings, esoteric beeps and frayed wire foliage battle for subtle dominance and all under the seemingly watchful eye and edit of Botanicus. Now on its own this is a weird record but it seems that its constructor wasn't satisfied with there being only one perception of the album; he being a fan of recycled sounds and mangled audio. So once the pressing was complete Daniel snuck into the Ultra Eczema office and hand drilled anywhere from 3 to 20 extra holes in each copy. The result is the ability to play the record at a variety of "wrong" speeds that alter the perception of the song. Unhinged to say the least!

Amen Dunes

Amen Dunes has received plenty of love around the RSTB halls, even showing up on this year's compilation with a stunning entry that showed his softer and harder sides. So it should come as no surprise that we're a bit excited about Damon's new EP coming out on Sacred Bones. This, along with an EP from The Bitters, marks the next installment in the label's spectacular, color coded 12" series. Again McMahon weaves heartfelt outsider folk with an attack of noise, though a few inclusions here may well be the closest that he's ever flown to the pop canon. Shades of 60's psych folk eke through the wooded chambers of McMahon's heart unfurling a sunlit beacon against bitter winds that stir up ravaged debris just a few paces further into this outstanding EP. As with his album it’s clear that McMahon stands delicately on the precipice of his noise and pop impulses, and rather than watering them down into single song entities, he's become adept at balancing a release between the two worlds. Though admittedly, this time he seems to be letting the light in more than usual, with perfectly sweet results.

Deutshche Wertarbeit

Deutsche Wertarbeit – Deutsche Wertarbeit
As Aquarius Records recently pointed out in their review of this just reissued and long lost Krautrock gem, its not often that you can recall many female figures central to that particular
movement. More to the point its even harder to recall a f a female figure working as a separate entity outside of an established band. This is exactly where Deutsche Wertabeit comes in. The working name for Dorothea Raukes who apparently got her start in an even lesser known blip on the German progressive scene called Streetmark, that also included amongst its ranks Wolfgang Riechmann, an early collaborator of Wolfgang Flür from Neu and Kraftwerk. Once unencumbered by her previous project, Raukes went the route that many solo Komischers of the time did, delving into swirling synth pulses and robotic time signatures. Her self-titled debut is a haven of early electronic impulses and synthesizer pacing that will certainly be of interest to those following the current return of analog impulses to the musical press and perhaps also to later adopters of Vangelis' soundtrack work. Raukes would go on to record three additional albums, one of which would see her reunite with Riechmann, before she slipped away from the public eye.

Bare Wires

Matthew Melton has torn through the pages of RSTB before with the gritty psych thunder of his band Snake Flower 2 and though his past work with Bare Wires did not go overlooked, now that they've been fleshed out to a 3 piece the results are much more intriguing. Backing off the iced whollop that SF2 was known for, here Melton indulges in whims of power pop glory, 60's garage soulfulness and just an edge of glam. Still a good amount of fuzz run through the guitars but this time Melton's got wide-eyed tales of romance and small town Saturday nights on the brain. As with most things he's involved in, its the authenticity of spirit that makes the record so much fun. The songs seem to spring from the same impulses that made overlooked classics like the Quick, the Shoes and even Slade feel like a peek into a post-adolescent world of girls and heartache and pent-up frustration. Melton is able to synthesize his influences rather than just spit them back out like color copies and that's what's made the best of this current generation of garage great. Nab a copy of the vinyl on John Dwyer's ever consistent Castle Face records.

We've been in Sore Eros' corner since their excellent first album on SHDWPLY hit our ears, so it doesn't take a lot of prodding to get us excited about new music from them in the form of a new 7" with the promise of an album soon on the way.

Sore Eros – Taal Compass 7"
The A-side is a humble slice of Robinson's trademark high quiver backed with a sleepy bit of psychedelia from the band. Floating on waves of somnambulant euphoria, the title track blurs like a kaleidoscope lit up in blues and
greens; shimmering ever so slightly and melting the edges of perception. On the flip side the band gets help from Gary War in an overtly gorgeous pulse of a track that threatens to overwhelm the senses as it builds to a conclusion. A perfect primer to the band's upcoming Know Touching album that's due out soon again through the ranks of SHDWPLY.

Ensemble Economique

The beauty of the packaging alone on Brian Pyle's Standing Still, Facing Forward is enough to pique interest but once opened and explored this solo project from the Starving Weirdos member is a gorgeous expanse of tones and emotion. Built around a bed of field recordings, later manipulated by edits and composition added to the pieces; the album moves from gorgeous soundtrack-like moments to cavernous drone explorations, each further solidifying Pyle's intention to sum up the California coast on the record. It’s as beautiful and otherworldly intense as the natural surroundings its attempting to capture, at times feeling wrathful and as chaotic as storms. At other times the album becomes serene, as crystalline and calm as early morning stillness. It’s certainly a more practiced step forward from Pyle's work with the Weirdos, noisy but never in the same abstract way that they seem to function. Here he seems to have harnessed noise only to impart to his listeners the nature of his mutable subject. Pick one up from Amish below. Comes with a letter-pressed band and 16 page art book.

Omon Ra II

Somehow the initial outset of Omon Ra escaped my gaze, but thankfully through a shared tape with Dirty Beaches this powerhouse of no discernible fidelity has come to the attention of RSTB as Omon Ra II. On the split Dirty Beaches pounds out his scuzzcaked Elvis jams and it all seems well and good, part of what was expected. That is until the tape is flipped and out of the speakers come the flayed histrionics of a boombox Hendrix shot too full of adrenaline and threatening to either come apart at the joints or bring the walls down trying. Seriously this level of acid bleached jam doesn't often find its way out into the world unless at least one member of Acid Mothers Temple is attached. As for the songs well they don't so much stick in your head as get pummeled past the processes of your brain that might function on memory. Damned foul luck sees this tape currently sold out at the label but hopes are high that more is on the way from The RA mk II. Be prepared when it comes.

Tim Cohen

Cohen is back again in quick succession with another solo album wearing a strikingly similar cover to his last one, The Two Sides of; but although the outside looks similar, the contents are definitely a departure from his last one man stand. This time the Fresh & Onlys vet unleashes his solo outpouring on the world via BK's own Captured Tracks and it seems such a natural fit its a wonder it took the two parties this long to intersect. Laugh Tracks is a bit more upbeat and fleshed out than the lonesome outsider shuffle of Two Sides yet it still retains that biting sense of wit and natural attention to melody that have made Cohen's work so vital over these last couple of years. His solo works seem to vent both a more introspective side of Cohen and a more experimental side; with outsider pop touches that aren't always aimed at catchiness sitting alongside horn flourishes that feel bigger than anything attempted on an F&O record so far. It’s another side of Tim but as with most releases bearing his name that cross this way, an essential one.

Elonkorjuu – Harvest Time
Not so inline with the Finnish model of psychedelics these days but although Elonkorjuu might not have fit in amongst the eclectic folk of the Fonal collective, they'd have no trouble sharing a stage with their Swedish neighbors in Dungen.
Built on a heavy base of prog and psych-blues the band was a hit a several youth concerts in their native Finland before eventually recording this organ blasted chunk of prog history. The band released a second album in 1978, following on the success of Harvest Time, though they used the English translation of their name (Harvest) to see if they could garner more attention in the prog-heavy circles overseas. Though they were a popular live draw the limited reaction to the second album ultimately led to their disbanding shortly after its release. They were resurrected in the early '00s and have begun to play again. TK Webb

It seems that for the time being, TK has left the Visions behind and perhaps that's to his credit. Switching from Kemado to the label's smaller imprint Mexican Summer feels like a natural move for the veteran songwriter on his latest self-titled album. With minor exceptions, the heroic bombast that accompanied Webb's adoption of a full band on his last record has been left behind. What follows is instead a return to his folk-blues roots albeit with a bit of a studio polish languishing in the background. Its the same rough, worn Webb that caught the ears of RSTB on his first couple of Social Registry records; imperfect, whiskey-throated and ragged in a way that feels like coming home after a long journey. And maybe that's what this is, a return to home after a strange side trip. Dragging the remains of a guitar behind him, Webb assumes a position on an old stoop; familiar surroundings but definitely not the same old song.

Two releases from the darker and lighter side of the great pop spectrum. Clockcleaner's John Sharkey is still keeping things dipped in heavy synth with his Puerto Rico Flowers project and Floridians The Jameses channel a bit of Flying Nun pop. All in all not a bad Friday.

Puerto Rico Flowers – 2 7"
Naturally, Sharkey's latest release is branded 2 being that it has two songs on it. Somehow I'm sensing a theme here. Anyhow this picks up the reigns right where 4 dropped them, with Sharkey exploring the dark side of the 80's pop palette.
Pocked with heavy tempos, rainy synths and a brood that seems like it came right out of the speakers in 1984, the A side is a perfect sequel to his last 12". Then, a surprising Neil Young cover on the flip gets the dark pop makeover, finding the goth soul you never new Neil had. Sharkey does the teardrop synth work so effortlessly you'd swear you heard one of his creations over the credits of an actual 80's film somewhere. And maybe its that spot on dedication to form that makes his turn down the road of darkened synth pop that's sprung up of late so refreshing; he's not imitating he's reaching back and writing from the same mindset. Definitely leaves me wanting more so hopefully these two are just a teaser for an upcoming album.

The Jameses – Rat People 7"
Seems like Florida's finally getting its due with whole crop of great bands springing out of there lately and the Jameses are just the latest to ride the pop wave out of the land of Disney and everglades. The A-side on this one is absolutely smile
inducing, cribbing bits of of the jangle and strum that made Flying Nun records a staple of ramshackle pop collections everywhere. A bounce of beat and a few effervescent spins later and its easy to see why these guys were snapped up for an upcoming Captured Tracks single. The flip isn't as shot through with sunshine but still no major clouds in sight with the organ riding high in the intro only to break through in shuffle of strings and a driving melody that's moody but with an upturned smile creeping through. Damn fine single for a band's debut and hopefully a window to future fun from these guys.

L.A. Vampires & Zola Jesus

Nothing brings a smile to the faces at RSTB more than a couple of our past favorites teaming up on one of the most solidly consistent labels ever to put the needle to the wax. L.A. Vampires (Amanda from Pocahaunted) seems to have a thing for sharing space on an LP cover, her split earlier this year with Psychic Reality having already made our list for tops of the mid-year. Well she may have just bested herself with this collaborative EP recorded with the increasingly high profile chanteuse Zola Jesus. L.A. Vamps' production cues are all over this one and it festers in a swampy wallow of dub infected psychedelia that could only come out of the Pocahaunted/NNF axis. Naturally this darkened environment seems perfect for Zola's witchy vocal work and the EP straddles fences nicely between both bands' previous works. Add a nice design, with a center hole cutout and faded black and white artwork and another essential piece of the Not Not Fun puzzle tumbles out of the So-Cal enclave and onto your turntable.

Horse Bladder

The contradiction in images that the term Horse Bladder conjures up and that Horse Bladder's music evokes are disparate to say the least. Far from the harsh reality that might live in the literal translation of her moniker, Elaine Kahn's work as Horse Bladder floats in an ether of dreams and smoke obscured horizons. Falling somewhere between the realms of Julianna Barwick's otherworldly repetition and Zola Jesus' dark pop universe, her upcoming cassette, Nicole on Night People is one of the most beautiful releases I've heard all year. Originally started as an offshoot of her previous project 50 Foot Women with Jessi Leigh Swenson, Kahn has definitely made this project her own. The tape's scheduled to come out later this summer and is sure to be wrapped in signature artwork by NP's Shawn Reed.
