Acid Mother's Temple

Despite being a cornerstone of RSTB in the past it feels like its been a little while since Kawabata and Co. have appeared on the site. Well, I suppose the wait is over because the group is back with a new take on an old standard. "Pink Lady Lemonade" has been a live favorite for years and even appeared on the similarly titled Pink Lady Lemonade - You're From Outer Space, Myth of the Love Electrique and a few live discs in the past and the band is exploring the familiar riff once again on Pink Lady Lemonade - You're From Inner Space. Launching the album with a thirty-plus minute take on the title track, they build up the track from space-rock swirlings to guitar flailings before delving into three more movements that explore the noisier, synthier sides of the motif before returning back to the guitar origins it started in. Honestly I've moved away from some of the band's later releases but this feels like a homecoming of sorts, with explosive guitar and spacey synth brought right back into focus and tied down to a molten theme that seems to speak to longtime fans of the band. Plus the whole thing is outfitted in a collage by Felix Morel with a return to their label roots at Alien8. Definitely one to pick up if you're even a casual fan of the band.

Moon Duo // Mazes Remixed

Ripley and Sanae return for another round of moonlight groove rituals and this time they fly much closer to pop's flame; with a few barbed hooks peaking out from beneath the murky waters of psychedelic slow burn. Caught the Duo not long ago here in NYC along with the RSTB faves Jacuzzi Boys and its great to know that they light this fire just as hot on stage as they do on record. The band has a bonus remix CD that's accompanying purchase of the album on the road and at select retailers. Where things could have slid into inappropriate dance territory, the band instead matches itself with a perfect assortment of sonic chemists to retool their swampy psych. Sonic Boom, Psychic Ills, Cave, Purling Hiss and Gary War all take stabs at retooling cuts from Mazes and all do so with swimming success. Check out Purling Hiss' blistering take on "In The Sun", scorching the track with the addition of his always vital guitar hysterics. Its highly recommended that you catch the band live and nab one of these if they roll through your town.

Ruthann Friedman - Constant Companion
Friedman may be more well known for penning The Associations' "Windy" and for her acquaintances with 60's luminaries like David Crosby, Joni Mitchell, Van Dyke Parks and Jefferson Airplane than
she is for her own quietly beautiful LP, but that remains just one more travesty of time. The album mines the same inroads that a few of her more folk oriented contemporaries trod, twisting past the introverted tales of Judee Sill, falling just sort of the otherworldly charm of Linda Perhacs and picking alongside Jo Ann Kelly. Thankfully Water Records has rescued this surely lost treasure from obscurity and tacked on an additional cut that Friedman produced while she was acquaintances with Parks. Ether has also just issued another lost single from the same time period, the similarly folky "White Dove" backed with a more 60's blues rock oriented cut, "Motorcycle Madness". Fans of any of the aforementioned artists would definitely be wise to add this to their collection.

Wet Hair

With their recent split with Naked on the Vague acting as a dip into pop's waters; Wet Hair's follow up, In Vogue Spirit is practically a jump into the pool. The band's most accessible batch of tunes to date boils with Krautrock rhythms, buzzing synths and a new focus on vocals that has previously been absent in much of the band's back catalog. It's not all motion and melody here though, the band still retains their experimental spirit, giving the record plenty of teeth to sink into any of those rising hooks. Along with contemporaries Lumerians and Moon Duo; In Vogue Spirit stands to gain a pretty solid footing in 2011's nod to the German Progressive underground. Which is a welcomed resurgence any day if you ask me. Check out the video (created by the band's Shawn Reed and Andy Roche of RSTB faves Black Vatican) for lead track "Echo Lady" below, which does a great job of conveying the band's psychedelic aesthetic through shifting shots of glare and kaleidoscopic nature walks.

The Mantles - Raspberry Thighs 7"
One of our favorites is back with another great double shot of frayed and frazzled pop for European imprint SDZ. The Mantles showcase both their laid back pop impulses, on the A-Side's sunny strummer, and their more frantic pop chops on the B-Side's
more Kiwi-Pop leaning "Roman Hat". Just as instantly enthralling as anything off of last year's Pink Information EP, this single is just another great step in the band's continued effort to build a spotless catalog. Highly recommended that you pick one up!

White Mystery

The smell of amplifier smoke is fresh on the air and it can only mean that White Mystery are back with another record; bleeding sweat and sweating blood in a crushing wave of riffs. Alex and Francis show no signs of bucking the moves they learned on their debut and the duo still cuts to the heart of garage rock like pumping out gravel blasted, three-minute gems was just second nature. White Mystery have always snagged a few hooks but the beauty of the band lies in lodging said hooks in a pound of swagger and the kind of from the hip thrust that hits you like a swung guitar to the head. They've spent a year letting the road seep into their sets and it seems that the dust of travel hasn't softened their blow a bit. Here's hoping they roll through your town soon in a flash of teeth, red hair, splintered sticks and broken strings.

Zomes

Another great Lungfish related release rolls its way into 2011. Ex-Lungfish guitarist Asa Osborne returns to his geometrically inspired project Zomes and this time he burrows deeper into the droned murk of the lower analog jungle. From the opening chords of, well, "Openings" the record hums like a warm transistor, pulsing with meditative, repetitive synth patterns and dust caked drum loops. Earth Grid feels like a record that can hardly be split into parts, rather it's two sides of disconnection from the grid via Osborne's trance-like burial of his listeners in layer upon layer of square-wave foam.

Clear Light - Clear Light
I've had this one sticking around a long while and just realized it never appeared here. Clear Light released this fairly solid slice of psych on Elektra in 1967 before the members splintered and all went onto fame in their own ways. Cliff DeYoung
became an actor appearing in Glory, Flight of the Navigator and The Craft. Bassist Doug Lubahn played on early Doors albums, Dallas Taylor would go on to drum for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and the others would go on to be successful in session work. The album has more than a few notes of The Doors and this could be largely due to their association with the band and coming up in the same scene. They had one hit (oddly not one of the strongest tracks from the album in my opinion) but that wouldn't prove enough to keep them in the public eye as a complete unit. Still, for psych collectors this is a great addition any day.

Co-Premiere :: Psychedelic Horseshit - "French Countryside"

With Psychedelic Horseshit it's often easy to let main brain Matt Whitehurst's mouth make up people's decisions about the band before they even hear a note. The songwriter has a history of verbally battling contemporaries in the press (Wavves, No Age) and a knack for agitation; but the man's always said if he could just get into a studio and get some fidelity behind him he had a hell of a record in him. So the first rule of Laced is "forget everything you think you know about Psychedelic Horseshit." The record weaves noise and melody through each other so often is hard to tell where one begins and the other ends. Hooks bubble quickly out of static and fade into samples of chatter. Noise is crafted into a tool of rhythm. Whitehurst has amped up his sonic palette and made a record that slaloms through pop chunks, extended psychedelic jams that would befit the band's namesake and electronic collages that far exceed the limitations of any of their previous releases. "French Countryside" is just the first taste of this fractured behemoth.

MV & EE

After a barrage of live recordings in the last couple of years, Matt Valentine and Erika Elder are back with a new studio recording for the folks at Three Lobed. Country Stash, unsurprisingly, falls right in line with a lot of the material that has shown up on those CD-rs and live records that popped up and a few live favorites like "Tea Devil" finally get a proper studio treatment here. The duo drifts their psych-blues on green-filtered sunshine and cold, crisp Vermont air, carrying their cosmic-folk into the ether in radiating waves. The band hooks up with some familiar players, most of whom have shown up on the live work, connecting the studio record to the sense of family and sonic community that they carry on the road. Mick Flower, Doc Dunn, Mike Smith and a whole host of psych's top echelon contribute here and the results are another gem of a release for the band. Though the live recordings will always show the immediacy and process of their songwriting, once they get into a studio it becomes evident why so many people pack out those road gigs each time. As with most Three Lobed releases this one's limited (to 625) and is presented in cooperation with Blatant Obviousness.

Bare Wires - Don't Ever Change 7"
Bare Wires turn in one of their cleanest, poppiest versions of their so called "soft punk" yet. A double shot of a single with two fun backbeat poppers that stick in your head like a couple of bright pink wads of bubblegum. The A-side's a slow burnin' rocker with
some sugar sweet backups and a whole lot of from the hip guitar. You can check out the "school days"-themed video below. It matches the back lot smoker vibe of this one kinda perfectly. The b-side might as well be a double a-side, with its power-pop moves and thumping beat. Honestly two of the best tracks I've heard from this Matthew Melton (Snake Flower 2) led project and it puts some pretty high hopes that their upcoming record, Cheap Perfume is gonna be a killer too.

Rene Hell

Jeff Witscher (aka Rene Hell) has been rather busy since the last time we saw him around here; releasing cassettes, collaborations (with Wet Hair and Pete Swanson) and still finding time to record his most ambitious album yet. The Terminal Symphony is Witscher's attempt to create a "tighter, more composed piece of music". Straying from the trend of some of his compatriots to create side-long, immersive pieces; here he's instead crafted ten gorgeously fragile and hypnotic tracks that while each able to stand on their own as concise compositions, also make up a moving and varied sonic sculpture once they're woven into the whole album. Working well within the analog palette here, The Terminal Symphony moves from pulsing crunch to languid, glittering ambience and into mournful classical graces seamlessly. Its definitely one of the most ambitious records of 2011 so far and each listen seems to peel back another layer of android soul. Check out the video below for "E.S. des Grauens in Fifths" created by Megazord, and because Type is particularly awesome you can preview the whole album on Soundcloud below.

SMM: Context

RSTB and Ghostly International have shared a love over the years for artists who blur the lines between minimal, electronic and classical music. Ghostly's often labeled these releases SMM and they've got a few gems under their own canopy that fall into this vein. With SMM: Context they begin an annual compilation series that collects some of the great artists making music outside their umbrella; collecting works from previous RSTB faves like Leyland Kirby, Svarte Greiner, The Fun Years, Rafael Anton Irisarri and Peter Broderick. Though culled from disparate sources the compilation weaves together a tapestry of bleak skies and finger-chewed anxiety. Each artist in on the comp has a proven track record of coaxing emotion from the seemingly elements, whether they be the grainy crack of field recordings or looped pieces of plaintive piano or glacial swells of strings. This is an excellent start to the series and an essential release for anyone into any of the artists involved.

The Vagrants - I Can't Make a Friend: 1965 - 1968
Usually renown for featuring a pre-Mountain Leslie West, The Vagrants were more than just a footnote in his legacy. This collection culls together some of the bands great singles from 65 - 68.
The band is at their best when they turn down the croon and get a bit of pre-punk stomp going on in their songs. The title track along with a cover of Otis Redding's "Respect" earned them minor hits but never really shot them to the stardom they were looking for, especially since the latter was released in direct competition to another cover of the seminal song (namely the one by Aretha Franklin). However the band did make a bit of a mark before West would team up with their producer Felix Pappalardi and tackle the Mountain. They were signed for brief periods to both Vanguard and Atco but it just seemed they couldn't make it happen. This stands as a great snapshot of the band's prowess, though, and an excellent addition to any 60's garage collection.

Co-Premiere :: Mark Templeton - "Scotch Heart" Video

Sweat Lodge Guru, OMG Vinyl's in house cassette label sent over this great new video for Mark Templeton's "Scotch Heart". The clip was put together by Kyle Armstrong using bits of 16mm and 8mm found tape bits that were hand painted and roughed up with dirt, ink, bleach and dyes. The results match Mark's ghostly ambient soundscapes perfectly, projecting a collage of images that feel like fractured memories.

Niggas With Guitars

Though it may sound like another ill fated Lil Wayne side project, this secretive group mines deep into the hypnogogic underground mashing melted drones against clipped 808 beats and blissful keys against time-warped vocals. Over the course of this super limited LP the cult of NWG whips through a syrupy array of styles that move the listener through waiting room muzak malaise right into Italian horror heights and varnish the whole thing under a crackle of library music that feels like the unraveling of a bad dream. Ethnic Frenzy is definitely not a one time listen, it takes time to melt into your consciousness and the more you let it soundtrack the moments of your life, the deeper you sink into its psychosis. The band has released a slew of limited tapes and CD-rs but its nice to see them getting the vinyl treatment here from Digitalis. If you run across this definitely pick it up because if you hesitate, it'll be gone!

Dirty Beaches - Street Beat Dub

Here you go, a little Saturday treat for your ears. Friend of RSTB Matt Koshak, sound engineer extraordinaire, sent this rough cut of a new project from Dirty Beaches. Koshak and Dirty Beaches main man Alex Hungtai holed up in a studio in Bushwick the other night and began work on a new dub leaning project for the band. They recorded this track live in three hours with the help of Dum Dum Girls' drummer Sandra Vu. The results are a gauzy Goliath of a track that rumbles deep into the brain's sympathetic tones. The dub element seems so perfectly matched to Hungtai's midnight guitar excursions that I'm surprised its taken him this long to branch into the territory. This is just a rough mix mind you but the end results will end up on a full cassette of dub divinations that's planned between the two collaborators. Look out for that one and get a taste below.

Human Eye/Sex Beet - Scion A/V Garage 7"
Another great teamup in the A/V Garage series, this time paring Timmy Vulgur's Human Eye with fellow weird poppers Sex Beet. Human Eye keep things twisted with their usual stew of twisted guitars
and sci-fi frazzle. This half of Vulgur's output has always had a bit more punk propulsion than his freakouts in Timmy's Organism and this track is a classic cut of their weirdo pop. On the flip Sex Beet don't pull things any closer to reality, but with a bit more levity and a lot less sneer than Human Eye they're bringing up the more lighthearted half of this record. As usual you can always download both for free at Scion and you can nab the Human Eye track below.

The Everymen - Hello, Nice Evening. We Are The Everymen 7"
Newcomers Sarin McHugh and the Everymen scale back their name for this second 7" and shine up the production. The resulting single storms through the doors with "Zeppole Ben" recalling a bit
of Rocket From the Crypt's throaty, ferocious rock. From there the band shows quite a few of their sides with a horn-flecked garage stomper, late-night barroom ballad and then close it out with a bedroom love song that feels six hours past bedtime and half a pack of cigarettes into regret. The band definitely hit some high notes here, especially when riding the rock vibe.

Enemy Earth

Enemy Earth stray from the beats and dust covered psych that made up the bulk of their Interstellar Commute album. Throwing any fan expectations that may have lie within their ranks aside; Bardo wafts through haunted melancholia, ambient specters and psychedelic subtleties that recall more meditative peers like Leyland Kirby or the more sprawling impulses of Demdike Stare. Grainy samples bump against methodical swells of bass and the weary plunk of pianos to create a record that is packed with far less movement than the band's debut but far more emotion than they've ever expressed. This marks a welcome shift in sound and a great addition to the current trend towards classical/textural minimalism.

Tape

Swedish duo Tape return with another serene collision of bubbling electronics and gorgeous folk. A co-release between Immune and Swedish label Häpna, Revelationes somehow winds the pair down an even more blissful path than they've been on in the past. Gone are the overtones of unease that bristled below the surface of Luminarium. Instead this album seems to deal with a slow descent into age, a coming to terms with circumstances out of one's control. This is, of course, all imbued through instrumental swells and the cigarette burn of distortion at the edges of their compositions. Definitely a lighter side to Tape but still evoking just as much serene melancholia as they've always mustered.

Naked on the Vague

The aural accompaniment to Naked on the Vague's soon go be released film, also titled Twelve Dark Noons which will be released later in the year as a joint venture between Night People and Sacred Bones. Here again the band is in full four-piece form and the extra push of drummer Lachlan Vercoe and bassist Nic De Jong bring a rhythmic clarity to their darkened post-punk. While the film is reportedly a manic unraveling of minds set in the Australian outback, the EP doesn't quite touch on anything that psychedelic. It does however mine a sinister strain of 80's post-punk that feels as at home with Sacred Bones reissues like 13th Chime as it does played in succession with your old Bauhaus records. Definitely some of the band's strongest songs yet and an inkling of the direction they're headed in as their sound solidifies. Leo Kottke - 6 and 12 String Guitar
This album marks Kottke's first full, wide release. Released on John Fahey's Takoma imprint after he received a demo from Kottke, it is preceded by a few hard to find recordings and is generally
regarded one of his best and most influential in his long career. True to its title, it employs both 6 and 12 string instruments much in the same rootsy fingerpicked style that Fahey is famous for and its easy to see why the veteran guitarist would have chosen to issue this on Takoma. Similarly Kottke has a knack for blending virtuosity with delicate emotion and driving rhythm to create pieces that are more than just awe-inspiring for their difficulty, they convey the same level of emotion that persists in both his Takoma labelmate Robbie Basho and Fahey himself. Even more impressive is that the record was recorded largely in one sitting, all the way through in the final playing order; seems like a sick dream in the current age of overdubbing. This was only the beginning of a career that would span into the next few decades but it still stands as one of the most incredible achievements in fingerpicked guitar.

Alexander Tucker

Another harrowing album from Alexander Tucker. This time the usually bleak folk artist has added an extra layer of doom to his repertoire with circular, pounding string arrangements, electronic cycles and the addition of improv drummer Paul May to the fray. Even with these elements creeping at the edges, its still Tucker's pained, expressive voice and apocalyptic songwriting that steal your attention. With lyrics inspired by his childhood experiences, sci-fi creatures and Alan Moore comics; Tucker strikes a very resilient psychedelic chord without ever relying on a barrage of effects to warp minds. Stepping slightly away from his fingerpicked roots while still retaining a sense of British Folk, Dorwytch is certainly Tucker's most ambitious outing yet and a testament to his ability to open up his scarred vision to a larger audience. Dorwytch is out on Thrill Jockey in April but you can get a taste of the doom below.

Mi Ami

The ever hard to Google Mi Ami have made your searches all the more filled with football players and teal and orange porpoises (yeah, yeah I know dolphins and porpoises aren't the same thing). In Dolphins, Daniel Martin-McCormick fully realizes the band's crossover from guitars to beats. With more than a bit of his lust for disco, that's been realizing itself lately as his Ital project, this EP pulses with a sort of drugged dancefloor dementia; all the while his usual yelps and frantic exclamations make these songs feel like it may be more than just the drugs that are inducing that rising sense of paranoia. Though hinted at in past works, like the Cut Men 12", this is as far as the band has strayed from a guitar based sound and honestly it feels like they've found a second stride; making this short release one of their most fully realized yet. Though the rubbery bass and frenzied guitar outbursts may be missed, this foray into the freakish underground of nightlife is a welcomed excursion.

Silver Shampoo

Last we heard from Denton's Silver Shampoo they were tearin' it up on a 7" for What's Yr Rupture? and it was a shaggy slice of alley punk if we ever heard one. Back now with a full length on the newly minted Krazy Punx label, an offshoot of WYR. Its hard not to love a band that features members of longtime RSTB faves Bad Sports and Wax Museums but throw in a biker obsession that's crept over from their Sonny Barger name-checking debut single and this album begins to shape up nicely. Fidelity bows to a visceral crunch of basement guitars and rat-trap drums. The entirety of Higher & Higher blurs by in a fury of spit and hair and pit scuffle. Its just the kind of album to shake the dust off your over analytical tendencies and make you shake your ass like a 16-year old breaking curfew. Scuzzy, but that's how we likes 'em.

Moritz Von Oswald Trio

Moving from vertical to horizontal on their second studio album, Moritz Von Oswald and his trio (ne quintet now) have blown open their structured sound to something more free roaming than they displayed on Vertical Ascent. With the addition of guitar from Paul St Hilaire and double bass from Marc Muellbauer, the trio has allowed their dub-drawled palette to engulf a syrupy form of Krautrock, a plethora of free jazz and some slow motion blues. These qualities weave deftly between the flecks of minimalist techno that pervaded the debut ushering them away from the Basic Channel comparisons that seemed follow its release. Horizontal Structures tears down the rigid structure allows the five players to bounce off of each other in a way that's just right for the headphone listener. The CD and vinyl have yet to arrive but digital customers get a bonus fifth track that makes their early adoption worth the price of admission.

John Fahey - The Great Santa Barbara Oil Slick
One of Fahey's most concise live works and a testament to his early songwriting, this album was recorded mostly at The Matrix in San Francisco. Its just Fahey and his guitar with scattered but amusing
stage banter cutting through the raw and ragged raga. Full of his usual fluid movement the pieces ripple with the spirit of indigenous blues, the barn-dance optimism of country and meditative hum of the raga's that seem to always inform Fahey's songwriting. Wrapped in a splendid, silver-inked packaging with some liner notes from Glenn Jones, this may be the easiest inroad for those not formally acquainted with the guitarists work over the many years of his career.
