Meth Teeth

Meth Teeth deliver on the promises made with their early tapes and 7"s, wrapping huge riffs in a layer of gristle and gravel to keep things from getting to friendly. A few of the tracks that appeared on the Night People tape posted here a while back return on Everything Went Wrong but with a little bump in fidelity and a slight window of clarity, but mind you only slightly. As corrosive as their namesake, the band take hold of the lo-fi wave storming the tape circuit and fling it through a rickety four track, choosing off the rails charm over the simplest pleasantries. A flurry of static, a crash of bodies hitting instruments and instruments hitting instruments twists out a rusted chunk of of a record reeking of back room grunge hangover and loner squat boombox anthems.

Meth Teeth

Portland's Meth Teeth show a darker, grittier side of themselves on this Night People re-release of their Indian Spirits Demo (listed here as a S/T cassette). The band has previously issued a 7" on Sweet Rot and has a ramshackle debut scheduled on Woodsist but here they subdue their catchiness a bit in favor of a few driving nuggets that spread thick. Overtones of nineties luminaries crouch in guitar lines that lay back lazy but still topple listeners with their leaden sheen and subtle crackle. The tape is a good entry point to a band that has only cracked their sound wide open from here. Chances are, as with most of the label's releases these days, that Woodsist LP is going to be a winner.

Christmas Island / Meth Teeth – Split 7"
Christmas Island seems to float in and out of vision, coming back into consciousness just when we forget how good they are. The crew are back with their sunshine spiked take on the Flying Nun catalog and its still
just as infectious as ever. Two cuts that walk the line between off kilter and scrappy indie pop. This one's actually been in the works for as long as we can remember, chocked up on Sacred Bones' release calendar before their 2009 album even hit the streets. On the second disc of this double 7" split, Meth Teeth turn in their swansong, having now disbanded, with songwriter Mattey Hunter moving on to work with the simply named NO. Both cuts here ride their usual lo-fi bummer wave through a detour in jangled pop territory and it’s a nice way to leave the field. The release is limited to 400 hand silkscreened copies and makes a nice little package for fans of either band or just the Sacred Bones stable in general.

Christmas Island

San Diego's Christmas Island has landed in all the right spots, seemingly simultaneously. Though the band currently have only a split 7" with Le Jonathan Reilly and an appearance on The World is Lousy With Ideas 5, they're looking at an onslaught of releases in the coming months. A full length, Blackout Summer is set to be released shortly on In The Red with 7"s on Captured Tracks, Sacred Bones (split w/ Meth Teeth) and Woodsist (split w/ Waavves) scheduled shortly before or after the record. It's pretty easy to see why so many labels are interested; the band has a subtle charm that mixes sunny California harmonies with a nod towards the garage in the vein of Kiwi poppers like The Clean. Keep your ears perked and ready for more because as I said, when the releases start tumbling out of this camp, its going to be too much to handle. Can't wait for that full length, In The Red is really killing it in '08 - '09.
