Ty Segall

It seems that Ty Segall isn't much for rest these days. He bounces back with another album close on the heels of last year's S/T thrasher, popping up this time on Memphis garage authority Goner. At first listen the real progression here is that Ty seems to have tempered a bit of the raw, fevered delivery that's pocked his work in the past. That's not to say that there aren't a few damaged howls lurking among the tracks on Lemons but the introduction of a handful of acoustic strums and some even tempered rockers add a nice balance to the buried needle sound that he's been known for. And though it seems Segall is best when he's on the verge of tearing himself apart, wounded howl in check and exorcising whatever ails seem to be bubbling to the top of his blistered throat; this new side of Segall seems to allow him more depth. There may be detractors who are looking for the pure volume and shamble they've known, but its nice to see Ty flout the expectations and round himself out.

Do you like this as much as the S-T from last year? I thought it was a little watered down, still good but not as good.

I think it is as good as the last years...in its own direction.

Hey dissensous, have you checked out the split 7" he (Segall) did with Thee Oh Sees? They cover one of the other's songs, "Maria Stacks" and "The Drag."

thats what I was saying, that last years record blew me away, and that as good as this one is, it just isnt blowing me away. But then again, last year I didnt know what to expect at all when i played that record for the first time.Hearing those claps and noises at the start of Go Home and then the blast when the music finally starts, not sure if anything will ever match my reaction to that song. too great. In Your Car is outstanding, and Cant Talk and Die Tonight are as catchy as anything off his self titled record. Im digging this new one much.

While I think its a little more reigned in than last year's S/T record I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing. Maybe not what I would have expected but its good to see a softer side of Ty.

Andrew: yeah just picked up the Oh Sees/Segall split the other day and its great. Also recommended is his split w/ Black Time if for nothing else but the cover of "Be A Caveman"
