Earth
A few years ago Earth resurrected on a quest to find the drone elements in country and Western trappings. The resulting album, Hex is in my opinion the best thing the band has ever done, achieving a tenuous balance between heavy drone and the lonesome whine of steel strings. Since then the band has continued to bask in their Western Muse, and with excellent results. On their latest, The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull, they've found themselves standing in the same desolate crossroads that Grails tread upon last year, feverishly quavering in the heat of Moriconne's ghosts. The album is a far cry from what the band started out as and, the Earth purists will surely cry failure, but those purists should have long ago moved on to donning their Sunn o))) robes and buried the past. The band has moved far beyond their roots and into brave new territory far from the thunder of drones and while quite honestly I'll always have a soft spot for that weird little bit of Hex in the transition I think that honestly the progression was all for the best.
