The Vagrants - I Can't Make a Friend: 1965 - 1968
Usually renown for featuring a pre-Mountain Leslie West, The Vagrants were more than just a footnote in his legacy. This collection culls together some of the bands great singles from 65 - 68.
The band is at their best when they turn down the croon and get a bit of pre-punk stomp going on in their songs. The title track along with a cover of Otis Redding's "Respect" earned them minor hits but never really shot them to the stardom they were looking for, especially since the latter was released in direct competition to another cover of the seminal song (namely the one by Aretha Franklin). However the band did make a bit of a mark before West would team up with their producer Felix Pappalardi and tackle the Mountain. They were signed for brief periods to both Vanguard and Atco but it just seemed they couldn't make it happen. This stands as a great snapshot of the band's prowess, though, and an excellent addition to any 60's garage collection.
