Thanks to the guys over at GvsB for alerting me to this one (must be sleeping on my Woodsist updates). Nathan Williams is tapping heavy into the West Coast slacker crust vibe under his assumed name of Wavves. This cassette snuck out in limited numbers but has just been picked up by Fuck It tapes and sister label Woodsist will issue the CD/LP version of this lo-fi gem. Lo-fi being a bit of an understatement here as Williams may have recorded this one straight to the crustiest of cassette 4 tracks imaginable, though its the rough edges and flippant creases that make this so endearing. The cassette may lack fidelity but it reaches out of the fuzz with catchy bits and amateur bravado befitting the best of The Smell set. It would appear that following this release/ re-issue Wavves will collaborate with several other noiseniks edging into view (splits w/ Christmas Island and Ducktails forthcoming) hit up the royalty of lo-fi labels (upcoming full length on Destijl, 7"s on HoZac, Tic Tac Totally and Release The Bats) and generally dominate the limited circuit. Given the strength of his debut I can guarantee you'll be hearing more from/about him in the coming months.

Two things:

1) I wanted to like this a lot more - the album kinda wore on me. But I will try it again.

2) I REALLY wanted "So Bored" to be an Exploding Hearts cover. Oh well. Someone needs to do that, though...
